The 5 Necessary R's of EVERY Teacher's Summer!

All school year long, teachers run about like crazed mad-men and women. They follow schedules, experience near-death almost bladder explosions, and endure frost bite from recess duty all in the name of educating these sweet lives we've been entrusted to.

Now it's your time.

Take it, but use it wisely. Have you applied these 5 R's to your summer yet?
Sleep. Take naps. Close your eyes and sit in the quiet. {You know, nothingness. With no children. No questions. No pencil sharpener. No buzzing of the intercom system. Just - blank. Remember that?

The school year is jam packed with insanity. You run from here to there and everywhere in between. Some days for lunch, you eat the crackers you found in your desk drawer from your Wendy's salad that you brought to work with you...a month ago...on a Saturday...to finish report cards.

Yes. rest. You are allowed. You are warranted a day {or 25} in bed, in your jammies, until it's dark, binge watching Netflix. Oh, and get crazy. Don't. brush. your. teeth.

Take your favorite book {or iPad to continue your binge watching of The Office} and your favorite cup of coffee or tea in your back yard and put your feet up.

"YOU TIME" is so important. Your brain needs to rest.

Remember "brain breaks"? Take a few.
Rest.
Your feet {and your husband} will thank you.
I know you're thinking, "Um...you just talked about this. Resting, right?"

Well, maybe. But if you're like me, just *because* you're sitting in your bed in your jammies all day doesn't mean you're necessarily relaxing.

This is what Mr. Webster says about this "R":
re·lax
rəˈlaks/
verb
  1. 1.
    make or become less tense or anxious.

So, do things that will stop your brain from spinning on the hamster wheel that it runs on 87.6 MPH from August until May-ish {because we all know that some of the hamsters start dying around mid-April...the wheels get squeaky and we basically only wash our hair twice a week at this point. Just - makin' it through.}

FOR EXAMPLE: Once upon a time, I got in my car, commuted to school my normal 35 minute drive, while thinking about everything that needed to happen from the moment I stepped out of my car until the moment the last little fanny walked out of my classroom at 3:15 pm....Somewhere between "I need to pee before I have to hold it for 6.5 hours" and "I need to open my black cabinet, where are my keys?", I realized I had left my keys in my car. Like, in the ignition. Running. Doors locked. Oops. {The hamsters were slowly dying at this point...}

So, what can you do to relax?

Make a craft.
Cook.
Bake.
Eat. {notice all the food references}
Work out.
Call a friend that you forgot you had because August came.
Go shopping.
Walk your dog.
Watch a movie.
Paint your toenails.
Go to a painting party.
Run.
Sit on your front porch and rock or swing.
Listen to your favorite song.
Bake your body in the sun.
Go swimming.

Unnnnwiinnnndddd....

relax. breathe.
stop thinking for 5 seconds about data team and organizing your writing center.
You CAN do this!

{I can see your brain still thinking. Stop it.}
Remember how once upon a time you did things besides grade papers, pass out band-aids, read books with pictures and obsess over anchor charts?

Go back to those days.

It's good to step out of "teacher mode" from time to time - OH! Except when you see that one kid at Wal-mart sassing his mom and you give "the teacher look". Even when you're 100 years old, you can always go back to "teacher mode" in this particular instance.

Do something you LOVE to do that has NOTHING to do with education.

****

I feel like some of you just lost your brains for a minute.

Let me say it again.

****
Do something you LOVE to do that has NOTHING to do with education.

If you love to sew, go sew something.

If you love to craft, go craft something.

If you love to cook a 4-course meal and put us all to shame, go for it.

If you enjoy book clubs with your girlfriends, form one and read a book that doesn't talk about comprehension strategies or classroom management.

It's fun to be all teacher-y
{Trust me. I know. The "Dollar Spot" at Target has my heart. No judgement here.}

But, it's also fun just to be you

Remember, we don't sleep at school like our kids think we do.

Everywhere you turn, you read stories about teachers leaving the classroom.

Educating tiny people isn't for the faint of heart.

It's selfless. It's time consuming. It's exhausting. It's stressful. It's a lot of pressure.

However, it's also...

Rewarding, full of joy, exciting, new, powerful and full of surprises.

If you made it through another school year, then you deserve a giant round of applause.

Remember, not everyone can do what we do. I know we think they can, but they can't.

{For example, I overheard parents *1 1/2 weeks* into this summer's vacation saying, "I can't WAIT for school to start! They are driving me nuts!"}

You are awesome.

You tied shoes, took attendance, applied a band-aid to a 3 week old scab, and said The Pledge of Allegiance all at the same time

Do you know any other professional that can do this, and still manage to keep the other 25 children under control, in their seats, quiet, and alive with just a hand signal? I don't think so.

So stop right now.

Think about *all* the AWESOME YOU did this past school year.

We collect data and analyze it for state testing, DIEBLES, behavior charts, writer's workshop, and so on and so forth.

But have you analyzed all of the AH-mazingness that ooooozed from YOU this year?

I know so many teachers compare themselves to others.

It's like we have a GIANT Venn Diagram in our heads all day long.

It's easier to want what other teachers have (scores, charts, ideas, bulletin board ideas), but daaannnng girl (or guy) - YOU are just as awesome.

Fill it out. Then reflect on all of the amazing you did this year.

Don't you dare bring up anything other than positive about yourself.

Remember what Thumper said? Apply that to this reflection.

Speak positive truth into your teacher soul. It will do you some great good.

As in carpe diem not the condiment.

Enjoy your summer.

I'm not saying throw out everything "next school year".

There are still polka dotted borders to buy, $1 prize box items to hoard and plenty of teacher talk to be had at the pool.

But enjoy the time you have been given with your family and friends to rest, relax, renew and reflect.

In 50 years, you most definitely will not say, "My word, I sure wish I'd laminated more posters, analyzed that data chart one more time and spent another week worrying about what should have been on that state test."

Make time to be whatever you are when you don't stand in front of 20-something faces for 180 days.

And enjoy it.

You deserve it.

TpT Seller Challenge Week 2: Dare to Dream

Last week's "Makeover Madness" was so fun and it was really inspirational to see how everyone made-over their products! I love a good cover photo!

I'm excited to link up with Third in Hollywood and the other gals that organized this seller challenge for this week's "Dare to Dream" blog post.

This week, I'm excited to share my dreams with you as I continue on this TpT journey!

First and foremost, Teachers Pay Teachers has been the biggest blessing to my family. We were able to fund 85% of our adoption fees with my earnings from TpT. Secondly, I am able to be a "Work at Home Mom" while taking care of my sweet baby boy, finishing up my Master's Degree and working on TpT. Also, this frees up time to help my husband more in Youth Ministry.

Still, I have dreams for my little store.

1) Second Adoption - We have already started saving for our second adoption. Noah is only 9 months old, but we want to prepared for when God calls us to meet our next little muffin. <3

2) Cash for a Car - We are praying that this fall, we can pay cash for a new(ish) car.

3) Adoption Fund - My hope and dream is to set up an adoption fund for families that are long to adopt. I'd love to help families at the beginning or during the end stages of finalizing adoptions. During those times, huge chunks of money are due for legal fees and such.

Have you linked up yet?

What are your dreams for TpT?

Until then,

{Five for Friday - June 19th}

Hi, friends!

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for some fun Five for Friday action!

Tomorrow I will be in my cousin's wedding. I am also pale...like Princess Ana and Elsa pale. I NEVER tan. For example, for my senior year of prom, I had to start in *JANUARY* tanning for 2-3 minutes at a time JUST to get some color by May. It's intense.

So, I have been slathering myself in Jergens "Glow". I'm not sure I so much as *glow* as I do favor an Oompa Loompa. Just saying. #thestruggleisreal

I'm so excited to celebrate my husband this Father's Day. Last year on Father's Day, we got the call that we were *finally* matched with a birth mother. It was the most precious day to receive a call that we would *finally* be parents.

So, for Allen's 1st official Father's Day, one of his gifts was this little modge podge frame. It was quick, simple and I think it turned out too cute! I mean, I kinda just want to keep it for myself.

I simply just printed out images on regular paper, got a .97 wooden frame from Wal-mart and modge podge the images on the frame. I then hot glued a piece of green ric-rac around the edges and wrote a sweet Father's Day note on the back with a Sharpie. {WARNING! Be careful when you are modge podging not to place your finger on the paper when it's wet. I accidently did this, and when I pulled up, little Noah's head was stuck to my finger. Oops. I just chose a different picture and modge podged over it.}

I also made my *own* version of this pin from Pinterest. Love it!

We had a play date with one of our friends. Noah and A were *adorable* together. A is obsessed with Noah's hair {I mean, can you blame the kid?!}. They ate Puffs, kissed each other, pulled each other's hair. It was a good time. :)

I am redoing my bathroom. As of yesterday, I have *all* the pieces needed. I'm just scared to death that I won't "Pinterest Love It" like I should, ya know what I mean?! My shower curtain is gray and white stripped. My towels are white and gray. Rugs are white. Just...I need to do it. I'm going to do it. {And then we can actually eat on the kitchen table because all this crap will be gone.}

I am *ONE* article and *TWO* activities away from being done with my newest nonfiction pack for 3rd-5th graders. Love it. Obsessed with it. I may or may not have even watched all 3 of the Jurassic Park movies. I mean. Ya know. If you want to see what's inside, check out my similar nonfiction pack, Ocean Animals. Love. it. too. {Next up...Zoo Animals, The Human Body and Our Military!}

Well, that was fun! Have you linked up yet?

Until then,

TpT Seller Challenge Week #1: Makeover Madness

Hi, friends!

It's funny that the first week's challenge is makeover themed. I've been in a makeover state of mind lately.

1) I got new glasses, which were much needed. My husband says I look like a teacher in these specs. Ummmm. Well.... *crickets*

{My husband and I on our *SECOND* date of the month...watch out, now!}

2) I'm redoing my bathroom. It needs a major makeover like whoa! Here are two of my purchases from last night at TJ Maxx. Don't you LOVE these?!

3) Last Friday, I decided two of my products -- Pocket, Pocket: Whose Pocket is Whose?: INFERENCE LESSON & TEXT STRUCTURE -- needed new cover pages so I fixed those little bad boys up for a little Friday face lift action...I mean, who COULDN'T use a face lift every now and then?!

4) AND...I updated my cover pages on Pinterest which took fo-evah-EVAH but it's done. Hallelujah.

Now, onto this week's Makeover Madness Challenge hosted by 3rd in Hollywood, Sparkling in Second, Teach.Create.Motivate, and Peppy, Zesty, Teacherista.

I decided to makeover one of my VERY FIRST products I ever posted waaaaaaaaayyy back in the summer of 2012 on TpT. I was super proud of this unit. I had zero percent idea of what the Geminy Crickets I was doing, but I bought some clipart, some frames and downloaded fonts like my life depended on it.

Since I've posted this item, Asking SUPER Questions, it's been one of my top sellers. After reviewing it today for the first time in years (*hangs head in shame*), I have mixed feelings about this product for several reasons.

First of all, it was ugly. Like U-G-L-Y you ain't got no alibi ugly

Secondly, the fonts I originally chose were horribly matched in the product. They made no sense. It was dumb. And shameful. And if there were font bullies in the world of TpT products, my fonts would be the victim. (Dramatic, much?!)

Finally, I just didn't like one of the activities originally added in this product. I never used it in my classroom, even with the best of intentions. So, I removed it.

Let's take a look at the evolution of this product, Asking SUPER Questions.

Oh, man. This product was made in Word. Before I had knowledge of products being made in Powerpoint.

Night-to-the-mare. Ya hear? (It makes me shutter just thinking about all the time I spent making products in Word...thankfully, it was just a few months. But daaaaaaaaaang, girl!)

Also, this product is SO OLD that when I opened it up on this computer in Word, notice the FUNKYTOWN fonts that are all janky. I literally had ZERO of these fonts on my computer now. Thank the Lord for that, though.

 No words. Just. No words.

SOOOOOO....not only did I update with all new fonts, clipart and edited the content of the product, I had to transfer the content ssssssslllllllooooowwwllllyy over to Powerpoint.

That was fun...like watching-paint-dry kinda fun.

BUT...it was TOTALLY worth it.

I love how it turned out.

{I actually had this on my to-do list for the summer...transferring other files over to PPT to update...but one at a time, I can't only pull out so much hair in one day.}

 Here's what I L.O.V.E. about the *NEW* cover page that I HATED about the OLD cover page:

{A} The fonts are fun, easy to read and not too complicated.

{B} The preview files of what's actually inside of this file you are purchasing.

{C} One singular awesome piece of Melonheadz clipart that makes my heart sing.

And...here's what I love about the NEWLY updated content in the file.

{A} The passages are cleaner and neater looking. Not so jumbled up, AND the kids can actually write on the lines provided in words that have letters larger than an ant's toenail.

{B} The graphic organizers are cleaner, and the font is more uniform. FONT, people. FONT is so important.

{C} The directions to one of my activity *actually* make sense and are in logical order according to the pack. The other directions - umm...not so much.

{D} Again, clear. Concise. Easy to read font if these are hanging on the wall. Just *enough* color to make them pop.

OH! And since I deleted one whole activity that was kinda dumb (I mean, if we are being honest, it was reallll dumb), the price of the packet is now $2 cheaper!

And in honor of this super fun MAKEOVER MADNESS WEEK, all THREE of my newly updated products are 50% off until Friday, June 19th at 10:00 pm EST!

{Click on the cover pages to link back to the products in my TpT store and get yo savings ON!!}

What product did YOU update?!
